RXM Creative has been awarded Red Dot: Best of the Best in Brand Design for NOUKK – Turning Discarded Materials into Luxury Fabrics.

NOUKK is a luxury textile brand built around a powerful transformation: taking sustainably sourced Arabian camel hair, an overlooked natural material, and refining it into beautiful, contemporary fabrics.

For me, this award is more than recognition for a branding project. It is a very emotional full-circle moment.

In 2008, right after graduating from FH Dortmund, I won the Red Dot: Junior Grand Prix for my college thesis, Surveillance Map of the World. The award came with a 10,000 euro prize, but more importantly, it gave me confidence at the very beginning of my career. It helped open doors, gave me momentum, and eventually paved the way for my move to New York.

Winning Red Dot again, this time with RXM Creative, the agency I founded with Mihai Botarel, feels incredibly special. I even invited my parents to be there, because this one felt personal.

Turning an Overlooked Material into a Luxury Brand

NOUKK uses an innovative process to separate the fine undercoat from coarse camel hair and transform it into sustainable luxury textiles.

Our challenge was to create a brand identity that could express that transformation: from discarded material to luxury fabric, from desert heritage to contemporary design, from local craft to global recognition.

We built the brand around the idea of transformation. The identity takes inspiration from the desert color palette, the quality of Arabian light, and the quiet elegance of the material itself. The logo is a custom logotype, with the letter “N” forming a subtle silhouette of a camel — a simple gesture that connects the brand’s origin with a refined luxury language.

The result is a brand identity that feels minimal, warm, elegant, and authentic.

Where Different Perspectives Create Something New

Mihai and I founded RXM Creative in New York with a simple belief: the best work happens when different minds, cultures, ideas, and perspectives come together.

Even our name comes from that idea: Raul x Mihai.

We have always believed that every brand has one element that can unlock its unique impact. Our job is to find that element, shape it, and turn it into something that can move people.

With NOUKK, that element was the transformation of camel hair — a material rooted in Arabian culture — into a modern luxury textile brand with global potential.

As Mihai says:

“We built RXM on the idea that the best work comes from bringing different minds, ideas and cultures together. That mix is where originality happens.”

That philosophy shaped the entire NOUKK identity.

A Brand Identity Built for Heritage, Innovation, and Scale

For NOUKK, we created a complete brand identity system that balances minimalism with meaning.

The system included a custom logotype, a camel-inspired monogram, a desert-inspired color palette, a refined typography system, and a visual language designed to work across packaging, digital platforms, product touchpoints, and brand storytelling.

It was important that the brand did not feel rustic or nostalgic. It needed to feel luxurious, contemporary, and deeply connected to its origin.

The identity reflects Arabian values such as respect for nature, community, craftsmanship, and understated elegance — while positioning NOUKK as an innovative sustainable luxury textile brand.

Design That Creates Human Impact

What makes this project especially meaningful is that the branding did not only create visibility for a product. It created visibility for people, craft, and communities.

The response has been incredible. NOUKK saw 700% growth in social media followers, and people began applying for jobs because the branding inspired them to join the company.

Even more importantly, the communities where the camel hair is sourced are now being recognized globally — not as folklore, but as high-quality craftsmanship.

That is the kind of design I believe in. Design that moves beyond aesthetics. Design that creates cultural, commercial, and human impact.

A Global Recognition for Independent Creativity

The Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design is one of the most respected international design competitions. Since 1993, it has recognized outstanding communication design, and in 2019 it became the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design.

The competition attracts entries from around the world, with international juries and award-winning work spanning many regions. Winning Best of the Best places NOUKK among the strongest brand design projects globally.

For RXM Creative, an independent agency with roots in New York and Europe and a global client base, this recognition means a lot.

For me personally, it means even more.

It connects the beginning of my creative journey with where we are today: building brands through strategy, craft, emotion, and a belief that different perspectives can create something truly new.

It was also important to create an identity that works effortlessly across packaging, digital platforms and product touchpoints, while evoking warmth, elegance and authenticity.

Red Dot Interview with Raul Mandru and Mihai Botarel

Red Dot: What is at the core of your design concept?

We were asked to create a brand identity for NOUKK, the first luxury textile brand to make products from sustainably sourced Arabian camel hair. Transformation was at the core of the idea – as was telling the story of how an overlooked material is refined through design, and how the heritage of the desert is honoured.

How is this reflected in the brand identity?

The design balances minimalism with meaning. All details – from the camel-shaped monogram to the desert-inspired palette – reinforce the idea. It was also important to create an identity that works effortlessly across packaging, digital platforms and product touchpoints, while evoking warmth, elegance and authenticity.

Tell us more about the typographic design, especially the logo.

The logo is a custom logotype, with the letter “N” forming a subtle silhouette of a camel. Rather than being a decorative gesture, this embodies the essence of the brand. The use of a sleek, modern sans serif with elegant serif headlines has a timeless and luxurious feel, and it also reflects NOUKK’s positioning between heritage and innovation.

Are there any other Arabian culture influences in your design?

The name “NOUKK” comes from the Arabic word for a female camel, so the brand is deeply rooted in local culture. We were also struck by the quality of the light, and by how the crisp blue sky contrasts beautifully with the golden sand. That interplay inspired our colour palette. The brand additionally reflects Arabian values such as respect for nature, community and understated elegance.

Has the feedback been positive?

I’d say the figures speak for themselves. For example, we had 700 per cent growth in social media followers. But what makes us most proud is the human response. People have actually been applying for jobs because the branding inspired them to join the company. There have also been positive changes in the communities where the camel hair is sourced, because their work is being recognised globally for the first time – not as folklore, but as high-quality craftsmanship.
